Been hearing a weird sound in the engine bay, tried to record it but not sure if its anything wrong, can anyone identify? Ford dealership wont do anything until i personally identify what's wrong, useless fecks.
I uploaded sound clips on voca.ro, couldn't get them uploaded directly.
weird sound in engine bay (engine or something else?)
Don't hear much either out of the normal. But there's some faint background noise. Idk if that's related or not. Have you tried to compare the sound on cold and warm engine? It should be a little less on warm.
On mine i think i also heard something odd but sounds normal warm and maybe just like some fan bearings or warmth needed to have all fuel and timing specs set. There is the addition with servo, mhev, ac etc that give it a bit extra sounds too compared to an older classic engine.
Hard to say anything more without more info. Anything visible out of the ordinary or have you located whereabouts of the suggested sound? Like a specific area of the engine to be able to compare the sound if there's any difference to another similar Puma?

I ended up going to the dealership for review, they have found "nothing wrong" but its gotten worse. Can anyone place the sound? It sounds raspy and a bit of ticking/clanking. More pronounced when the engine was just started, and then happens most frequently at the beginning of acceleration, especially with cold engine but is audible at all times. Very pronounced when going uphill.
You can hear it best at 11 seconds when i accelerate and then at the end of the video just before i shut off the engine. I'll try and get a better video later, this is best i could do, my phone is not really picking up that sound too well.

Some wild guesses. Since you say it's pronounced going uphill it's like the engine lacks some power. But are the emissions ok? Any smell of gasoline like if it could be the issue with the fuel lines to the engine? Maybe turbo issue like an airleak, something wrong with timing or the mhev system not working as it should?
What type viscosity oil do you have and brand? Anything out of ordinary on inspection? Air filter and oil level ok?

Thanks for the reply @geno , answers below:
- air filter and engine oil were replaced last week during routine maintenance service. Nothing improved since then. Not sure what oil they use!
- I did notice smell of petrol near the exhaust has become more pronounced over the last few months. Would that indicate a fuel line issue?
Are there any tests that i could do myself to help narrow down the possible issue? The dealership is extremely frustrating to deal with, they seem to ignore all requests until I explicitly tell them what the issue is (had the car in twice now to see whats wrong, both times they said its ok).

It sounds like a turbo wastegate rattle. My car rattles every time the engine is cold for about 30 seconds before the revs decrease. It is very annoying. The sound is then also audible when the engine is still cold and accelerating at low revs. Here is the rattling sound from another Puma on YT. Watch the video and try to compare. I apologize for my English (Greetings from the Czech Republic)

Do you have any other dealers close enough that could be asked to diagnose the issue based on what you know? Mine also i let idle for a while when cold and it may sound a bit rough at first but then you start seeing the exhaust fumes coming out it calms down and fine. I believe the gasoline particulate filter and wastegate or egr can cause these rough cold idles but a bit concerned about the petrol smell you mentioned, but does it also smell after a drive when it's fully warm? I think the fuel lines are behind the engine in a hard to see spot.. if you still smell fuel after the drive i'd try visually inspect the fuel lines if they show any sign of being "brittle".. also that sound reappears when driving uphill? have you tried the same hill in a different gear if it's a specific rpm range on a gear that causes it?
Also, when letting the car idle or having someone when it's in neutral gently press the gas, can you see water coming out from the exhaust or dripping from the rear silencer underneath? If this is the case the angle of the silencer is such that it could cause a water lock + the backpressure could mess with cold idle. My local workshop mentioned this on many new cars that they drill a small drain hole for the rear silencer at the lowest point, to avoid it.
Still making some wild guesses.. i think the sound and issues should be heard and seen on site by a professional to make sure.

ohhh that does sound very much like my issue @crui5er ,thank you so much for sharing the video! Have you tried getting it fixed by ford? I'm going to try and get it looked at by them, but it sounds like its "within spec" or whatever words they use when they dont want to fix things
@geno yeah, the wastegate rattle wouldnt cause the smell. Ill get it checked out again!
