Ford, along with other manufacturers, are moving eventually to Android Automotive, not to be confused with Android Auto.
So updates etc on later vehicles will be easier to install and will be out of Fords hands and updated via Google. No models named in the UK as yet as they've only recently rolled it out to Lincolns in the US.
No solution for those of us stuck on Sync 3.4 though. It's useless for Nav, which is why I tend not to use and have Android auto permanently on in my Puma.

What's the difference between Automotive and Auto?

Perhaps I should just Google it

More integration in to the car systems.
Apple Carplay is doing the same.

Rather than just a phone mirroring system they will both allow adjustment of car settings like heated seats and aircon etc. This will allow the manufacturers to step back a bit from writing software because it'll be handled by those to some extent. It'll also integrate more with the dash screen to allow things like maps to show there and possibly various dash layouts.

Automotive is a system custom built to be integrated fully and replace manufacturers systems entirely and will include Google apps (or Apple) such as Google maps and Waze.
Android Auto is phone based and can do most things needed while driving, like phone, nav and sounds etc, but not control the cars systems.
Google it or read the article I linked to, it'll give you a basic idea.

Hi all,

So I finally got my Sync 3 updated to the newest version 3.4.23188. I need to update the Sync first and upload the log file to unlock the updates for the F12 maps. But if I use Apple CarPlay does the Sync system actually use the F12 maps or does it use the Google Maps on my phone? If anyone knows the answer I would love to hear❣️🙏🏼🤗

P.S. I’m too lazy to look through 147 pages on this thread to see if the answer is there…😬

It uses your maps on the phone.....I use Waze more than Google maps, I find it gives more information on a drive. ;) :D

Carplay uses whatever map app you want to run. Google, Waze, Apple etc, displaying on the main sync screen.
Sync will still use the inbuilt Ford maps.

Main difference is that carplay will not show the route directions in the dash display, where sync will.
I've wholly switched over to carplay with an ottocast box in the armrest for wireless connection. Works great and is a lot more up to date and accurate than any Ford maps will be.

Thanks guys! 👍🏻. So I will install my CarlinKit without the F12 update cause I’ll use either Google Maps or FlitsMeister, a Dutch/Belgium app that also warns you for (mobile) speed cameras, speed trajectory control and other traffic stuff.

Everyone bleets on about google maps, I think it is a pile of sh@&£ Doesn’t give your true speed in car play and is even worse when not navigating, no thanks absolutely crap. Waze is far better and so is TomTom and I even prefer the standard Sync system!

Anyone know what’s been updated or fixed in 3.4.23188? As I’m a firm believer if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
